Roscellinus
(c. 1050–1125)
   Philosopher.
   Roscellinus was probably born in Compiègne, France. He was educated at Soissons and Rheims and then he returned to Compiègne. As early as 1102 he was accused of teaching that the three persons of the Trinity were three separate divinities (tritheism). He denied the charge and subsequently became a Canon at Bayeux Cathedral and he taught at Loches, Besançon and Tours. Again he was accused of tritheism and among his detractors were anselm, abelard and John of salisbury. Little of his own writings survives so it is impossible to assess the truth of these accusations. He also seems to have insisted that universals have no independent existence of their own and that reality can only be ascribed to particular things or instances. This position is known as nominalism and emerged as a reaction to realism. Roscellinus is generally regarded as the father of mediaeval nominalism.
